For the longest time I have admired heroes. I imagined them to be people of change, people who would bring the world forward and take us to even greater heights. It was then however, that I realised the 'Human Obstacle'.

Humans as I discovered, perhaps in the most painful of ways, are rather unintelligent beings. They are driven by their core instincts no matter how much they wish to deny it. And the only difference between one and the next is how deeply they let those instincts consume them.

If you walk out into the streets, you can see the well-adjusted average man. Yet in his mind he is not considering the good he could do with his life, he is only thinking about the next step. Where will I go next? Who will I be dating, what shall I enjoy next in life?

There is no thought of altruism; no sense of assistance for another. He could walk down an alleyway filled with the homeless and nothing would change...

If that is the case, then what is the path of truth? Is it doing as the priests and monks tell us? Should we be meditating or attempting to achieve a higher state? No, that is only possible for a few. Some can accept such a life, some may only pay lip-service to it. Some choose only to attend on Sundays believing themselves expunged of all sins. Yet, that too is but an illusion of sanctity.

Well, if the lord will not offer me an answer. Then perhaps the creatures of the Nether might...

I recall it being a very bright and sunny day when I first performed the ritual. When I first took my baby steps into the world of shadows. I began by lighting candles, arranged in a circle of six. I admit that I was rather cowardly, seeing as I didn't want to chant the ancient verses in the dead of the night.

Yet, as my intonations progressed, the sky turned cloudy and dim. It was as though the night itself had come to me, but I knew that it could also be because I lived in a country of rain and shade. I was not hopeful, but that soon changed. For with a crackling spark and the roar of an inferno, the candles burned themselves out as a presence drew close to me and wrapped it's long claws around my shoulders.

I turned around slowly and found myself face to face with a legendary Demonette. She was as beautiful as the many ravings of the madmen have described her and there is simply no way to express how deeply she enticed me. Her long red hair, hung down to her hips, barely covering the large, supple treasures that lay beneath. Her forehead was crowned by a pair of large black horns and arms ended in sharp, scythe-like claws of the same colour. Her feet however were dainty and beautiful and the rest of her was pale and flawless.

What would you ask of me mortal? She crooned gently as she ran a claw over her soft flesh. At that time, I felt as though I were going to blurt out, "I would like you my dear!" But perhaps I am a fool, or perhaps my senses are simply forged with a will of iron. For I instead saying, "why are humans the way they are?"

She sighed as though disappointed, but she answered my question fairly. True, I was trading blood for this, but at least I got a solid answer instead of a mere, "The lord works in mysterious ways".

Humans, she began, are actually creatures no different from demons. They are in essence, half-breeds, for within them lies the choice to do immeasurable good, or to fall into the depths of depravity.

"And which of these wins out?" I asked her, as she smiled in response.

Depravity of course, as if you even need to ask. Though unlike we demons, humans are not driven by a single over-ruling instinct. They can instead fall prey to all possible desires: greed, gluttony, lust, excess, wrath, pride, envy, sloth and so many, many more.

"I see and which of these are you?" I asked her. Naturally I got a rather incredulous look, because it should have been obvious from her appearance alone.

Desire of course, she said with a cheeky grin as she began to approach. Am I not the fairy of your dreams? As she asked the question, she placed a claw upon my thigh and it felt wonderfully soft as it stroked my skin. She brought her voluptuous body close to me and pressed it against my chest. Would you like to experience me I wonder?

Yes, yes and most definitely yes. How could I say 'no' I wondered, though perhaps my lips had a different plan, or perhaps it was simply the years of beta-esque behaviour that saved me. "Maybe next time," I said to her, patting her claw and stepping away.

Suit yourself, the demonette replied, suddenly looking bored. Is there anything else?

"Actually, I did have one more question. If humans are so depraved and driven by instinct, is there no way to unite them and bind them together?"

The demonette's lips flashed with an evil sneer. She seemed absolutely thrilled by the answer to my question, as though it piqued an interest of hers. Before she spoke, I found myself licking my lips nervously, it was as though I were on the brink of hearing something forbidden.

Sacrifice of course, but not the kind that heroes or men of justice perform. That will do nothing. Heroes after all are simply humans, but they somehow have greater control over their excesses and their desires. After the great enemy is vanquished though, they lose all sense of self and most become even worse than the demons they choose to exorcise. No, I speak of a different form of sacrifice.

"And," I asked, feeling eager, as though upon the brink of understanding. "What is this sacrifice?"

A villain's duty, the demonette replied. In this world, humans are wired to think in terms of 'us and them'. Self gain and self preservation over that of their enemies. Yet, in a world of 'peace' and 'hope', there is no great enemy and so humans divide the 'us and them' amongst themselves. This man is like me, this man is not. They divide and vie for the position at the top. Nothing can really stop them except for a villain's touch.

One man, one individual must be willing to bear the collective hatred of the entire human race. He must become the great enemy, until an actual one arrives. By doing so, and assuming he is not truly driven by his dark instincts, he can split the darkness from the human race and absorb it. After all, when the darkness arrives there will be humans who choose to give in completely to their depravity. It is then that the villain can act where the hero cannot. Humans are stupid after all, they will demand laws and trials and stymie the hero's justice, but not the villain's. The villain may execute any whom he does not agree with, simply because it is in his nature. Yet, who amongst the humans would be willing to do such a thing. To know that for the greater good they must remain the greatest threat. An eternity of being eternally despised. For good cannot exist without matching evil.

I found myself grinning, as though all my hopes had been realised. This, this was the solution I had been seeking all along and I was eager to take hold of it! "You are a demon of desire are you not? What if I said that my greatest desire was to see this come to fruition."

Then I would assist you and I will be yours until the end of days...

I laughed, the loudest laugh that I'd had in awhile, as I wrapped my arm around her waist and kissed her to seal the contract. "Then it is done, at the end of eternity, I am yours to torment, but for now, I require power!"

Then first you must seek immortality my dear, she whispered as her clawed hand stroked my cheek, for the villain cannot be freed until his work is done.

"If that is so, then we are set. For only I shall live forever..."
Ladies and gentle pirates,

We have another commission for :iconvivacia18: - Cool crafts and DA connections. If you aren't watching her yet, you should be. Info and art is what she shares, and that's something unique.

Now in this story, she wanted me to create a demonic piece that wasn't outright demon worship (which I can also do) and so I decided to write something...a little close to heart >:3

Enjoy everyone (^_^)/

If you too would like your own literature commission done. Check out my journal (wordofchen.deviantart.com/jour… and then send me a note. Plenty of interesting concepts await you and I swear to make your imagination come to life :3

:iconpointcommissionsask: - Your imagination is your only limit (and I suppose your wallet .3. xD)

And so he became Satan, the great "Adversary".

And I thought the challenge Jesus took on was beyond extraordinary!

This is amazingly clever!

Wish I could get a glimpse of your "bibliography", haha.
