Heartstrings are entirely lethal things
Because emotion kills us more
Than the death that guns bring.
We stifle our own dreams
And suffocate the beating heart.
All because our crippling emotions
Decided to tear us apart.

next time you're alone with your lover,
look deep into their eyes
they might ask you what you're doing
and scrunch their brows
they might crinkle their nose
and tip their head
impatiently.
Tell them to wait.
watch the ribbons in their irises,
the milky muddle of color near the peripheries,
watch the little broken bridges of fibers
that once let the light walk right up to the pupils
and shrink them with a mischievous touch.
then, take their hand after a time
and hold it close to your chest
like you would the rest of them.
there is a phenomenon yet to be explained which occurs
when two people in love stare into each others eyes.

somewhere between his
gasping green eyes
there is the lip print
of a woman he doesn't remember.
she doesn't exist to him anymore,
but to me she is a
bloodstain that won't wash clean,
the black X's slashed into my calendar.
so when he comes home,
I
grab him by the tie
and
slam him to the wall
and
kiss him
hard
until the press of my lips
defiles the grave of
a girl who once
thought he was beautiful.

imagine trees of tangerines,
heavy sagging suns on all the branches.
rip one down, introduce it to
vivisection
(though dead or alive, it
never cries out),
and
squeeze
until pulp like entrails
forces itself between your dripping fingers.
stare blankly at the mess
and attempt to clean it,
succeed only in
staining your clothes golden.
work the designs against your skin
until the mistakes become tattoos
and the rinds before you look
less like refuse and more like
fresh-hatched eggshells.
as the morning scent stings your senses,
reach up.
don't look,
just touch, and
rip down another.
and another.
and another.
